Primipara¡¯s caretaking behavior and their self-confidence in maternal role

Abstract
A primipara, becoming a mother for the first time, experiences confusion and conflict while acquring her new role. Thus the purpose of this study was to investigate the mother¡¯s caretaking behaviors and self -confidence in maternal role during the first 3 days after delivery.

The subjects selected for this study were 160 healthy, married women who were delivered at E university hospital and their baby was normal condition also. Data were collected from June 1995 to March 1996 and analyzed by using SPSS program.

The findings are as follows

1. Primiparas report difficulty in performance of caretaking behavior for their baby was especially breast feeding, bathing, umblical cord care, identify the crying and baby¡¯s condition.

2. The degree of self-confidence in maternal role of the primiparas was slightly above a average score. And the degree of self- confidence in maternal role of the mother who were not employed was higher than that of the mother who were employed(t=2.0, p=.04).

3. The higher the caretaking practice score of the mothers, the higher the degree of self - confidence in maternal role(r=.645, p=.000).
